What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host according to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition. The term "probiotic" comes from Greek meaning "for life."
Live microbes of non-pathogenic nature that are beneficial to their hosts
Most commonly used strains include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Lactococcus, and Streptococcus
Known by genus, species, and strain - for example, Lactobacillus acidophilus ABC
Different strains of the same species may have different health effects

How They Work: Probiotics exert their effects via enhancing the epithelial barrier, promoting microbial adherence to the intestinal mucosa while suppressing pathogen adhesion, modulating the immune system, and creating biochemicals that can suppress the growth of pathogenic microorganisms
